Normal Hair Cycle

A normal hair cycle consists of following three stages.

  1. Anagen Phase: It is the hair active growth phase. It lasts for two to eight years.

When a body undergoes stress conditions such as in surgery, the body produces too much cortisol– the stress hormone. To combat it, the body drives a healing mechanism. Since hair is not required for any metabolic function or other processes, hair is the last organ that gets the nutrients and energy. Telogen Effluvium usually completely resolves in a span of a few months post-surgery and does not require any treatment. The hair follicles are affected for a temporary period. Hair regrows in eight months.

Conditions That Trigger Stress

If a body encounters stress, the cortisol production of the body increases. The conditions that trigger such stress are:

  • Childbirth
  • Surgery
  • Anesthesia
  • Accident
  • Sudden weight loss
  • Jetlag
  • Nutritional deficiency
  • Thyroid conditions such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism

Diagnoses of Telogen Effluvium

Diagnoses to identify telogen effluvium can be done by following steps.

  • Noticeable Hair thinning
  • A Hair pull test- increased number of hairs indicates hair loss condition
  • Trichogram (Clinical practice) test. A 25% telogen hair confirms the disease.
  • Light Microscope examination
  • Chronic examination requires scale biopsy.

The most common medicine prescribed for Telogen effluvium is minoxidil. Minoxidil is proven to be effective to stimulate hair regrowth. It is a mainstay treatment for androgenetic alopecia and hypertensive conditions. On the other hand, anti-hair fall scalp tonics and serums can be used also. If the hair loss is significant, in-clinic scalp treatments and low-level laser treatments are also recommended.


Hair loss conditions due to stressful conditions is a normal thing. The condition usually heals on its own without any complication.
